Went over HW problems 3,8,9,14,24,42 on Applying Newton's Laws worksheet (back side)

Students did problem 43
Students tried problem 45a and then I worked it on the board

Assigned 44, 45b, 48 for homework

Handed out CD 5.2 - Students worked on it in class

Tuesday, Jan 19, 2010

Answered questions on RA 4.4 from Block 1 and then collected it.
Collected any CD 6.1

Did fan cart demo/expt and had students calculate the friction force and coefficient of rolling friction

Had students look at 5 block 3rd law problem and went over it

Assigned problems from back of Applying Newton's Law worksheet - first six circled

Students should bring textbooks to class next period to review end of chapter questions and problems. We will also go over some of the problems from the worksheets.

Reviewed Newton's 3rd Law from last class

Examples of punching paper and kicking ball
Horse Sense worksheet and drawing competition

Collected RA 4.4 from Block 1
Answered questions on Newton's Laws Worksheets

Allowed students time to work on RA 4.4 (Block 1), Finish CD 5.1 (due today), work on CD 6.1 (new today, due next Friday), or work on problems from Newton's Laws Worksheets

Lecture/Demos on Newton's 3rd Law

Handed out Reading Assignment to Block 4 (forgot for block1)

Friday, Jan 8, 2010

Collected Air Resistance Labs - Had students make sure they had their names, partner(s) names, Title of Lab, and date.

Collected, graded, and handed back CD 5.1 for those that turned it in. These are do for the last time next Thursday

Content Objectives:
Student will be able to:
. Correctly draw free-body diagrams for "complicated" situations
. Use the problem solving strategy to solve Newton's Laws problems with inclined planes and coefficients of friction

Homework: at a minimum, do problems 3,7,8,9 on the Newton's Laws - Practice Problems worksheet

Handed out Free-Body Diagram worksheet. Students worked on it and then we went over it in detail as a class

Handed out problem solving strategy guide sheet for Newton's Laws

Solved a problem using the problem solving strategy. A block started at rest and slid down an inclined plane with friction. Given the mass, angle of incline, distance it slid down, and coefficient of friction, we solved for the time it took and the speed at the bottom.

Handed out two worksheets with problems on Newton's Laws: Newton's Laws - Practice Problems and Applications of Newton's Laws.

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Wednesday, Jan 6, 2010

Content Objectives:
Student will be able to
. State the factors affecting air resistance
. Explain air resistance using a model of pushing aside air molecules
. State the factors affecting contact friction and compare to the factors affecting air resistance
. Describe what is meant by the coefficient of friction and explain how it is determined
. Distinguish between static friction and kinetic friction

Show Hewitt video on air resistance (2nd Law)
Go over any questions on air resistance lab.

Do contact friction lab

Hand out CD 5.1 due Thursday of next week for the last time.

Monday, Jan 4, 2010

Sorry about all the missed blogs.

Handed back and went over Newton's Laws Test

Students did Air Resistance Lab, write-up due Friday.
